Breath of the Wild

6 months after the release of the Switch 2, improvements to the newly created subcategories have not slowed down. VietnamNoOoh and huiwengege made continued improvements to All Dungeons on 30 and 60fps respectively, with the S2E so far proving itself to be the faster version at a 1:33 (now 1:30 at time of writing) which was where v1.6.0 runs were at a year and a half after BLSS's discovery. Vietnam wasn't restricted to just AD, as he also ran the first 1.8.2 All Main Quests run and made another 5 minute improvement to 1.8.2 Best Ending.

Also on 30fps 1.8.2 was Player5 embarking on the 100% grind. Already, he has taken advantage of the Switch 2's faster loads and has managed to beat his v1.6.0 world record by 12 minutes so far. Given 1.8.2 only really patched out BLSS and 100% is mostly just windbombing the run isn't particularly impacted by the update, making the faster loads even more impactful. He's currently grinding for the 14:2x, though his sum of best is just seconds away from the sub-14 which suggests we may be looking at the next hour barrier being broken some time later down the line.

October also featured some more Korok runs, as daqiu collected 100 Koroks at 60fps two minutes faster than he did on 30fps which I was pleasantly surprised by. I would not have expected the more powerful Switch 2 to make enough of a difference in the overworld especially considering that Plateau is at least a couple of minutes slower. In Bug Limit 10 Koroks, Frozen_Bnk took advantage of the new route that no longer warps back to the Shrine of Resurrection and taking the record comfortably under the 10 minute mark. If you'd have told me two years ago that the record would be a 9:44 today I would've been totally puzzled. Once I've finally finished getting the Bread% world record back I can't wait to have another go at the category.

And speaking of me having another go, I ended up running Maxed Champion's Tunic again for the first time in 2 years to see how much time I could save over my old run and was taken aback by how close a sub-50 run seemed. And sure enough, within the week I managed to get it down to a 49:39. Motivatingly this was with bad Naydra scale RNG so the run lost a fair amount of time having to glide to it, and it means a 48 is far from an unreasonable target. MCT has quite an interesting history so I'm very pleased to see it sitting today so far under an hour now.

Tears of the Kingdom

In Tears of the Kingdom, the vast majority of the excitement was taking place in the main board's longer categories. Xdri33s capped off the latest race to optmise All Dungeons by finishing with a 2:27. It follows all the improvements to movement tech that have been developed throughout the year and impacted most categories that go beyond Any%. This obviously includes All Main Quests which Xdri also did runs of, being the first world records since zfg's 3:27 two years to follow the more specific rules put in place last month which you can read about in last month's Record Roundup.

The category I'd recommend keeping an eye on is All Shrines which is facing a similar optimisation race All Dungeons did the previous few months as new strats have been developed for the new route. Within the month of October both DinoTech and EliasNXKO absolutely smashed the 6 hour barrier with almost an hour's worth of improvement, bringing the category very close to even the 5 hour barrier. Like many TotK runs currently, this puts All Shrines at a similar time to where BotW's All Shrines (unrestricted) time was in the months leading up to BLSS's discovery. AS in particular is a category I thought wouldn't come close to BotW with it's 32 extra shrines and yet hear we are: waiting for the first 4 hour run.

Great Sky Island runs seem to have taken a little break over the last month, with Echecetdame's 6 second improvement to 60fps Any% being the only Any% run. However, my 100% grind did dome to an end with the result I was looking for, as the newer wingflip route cemented itself as the optimal route. I was very happy to have got the 35 and one below 35:30 as well, though I'm aware there is plenty to clean up in future runs to the point that even a low 34 is possible. For a lot of categories in both BotW and TotK there's a lot of potential for runs to go places not thought feasible as little as a year ago.
