Breath of the Wild

With the dust settling in the wake of the Switch 2's release, we only saw more and more activity as the new category splits are getting their first runs verified. huiwengege has been leading this charge and running a wide range of categories on the Switch 2, from All Dungeons (which TyTt now holds the record of) to Best Ending. While these are very early days, it definitely is interesting to compare the Switch 2 Edition times so far to 1.6 runs or even pre-BLSS runs because of all the extra challenges imposed by the quirks of 60fps.

It's unfortunate that the majority of No Limit runs are consistently slower than their 1.6 counterparts, however one run that stood out was daqiu's 100% Extended run. At 17:49:31 on their first submitted run they have managed to beat their 1.6 time by a comfortable 20 minutes, and are currently only an hour and 22 minutes away from Ikurapan's current 16 hour record. There is so much optimisation potential for both DLC and no-DLC 100% and I'm holding out hope that eventually the Switch 2 Edition will triumph and become the fastest version.

In almost all the months I've talked about so far, I've spent a decent time banging on about Great Plateau Any% Bug Limit. Well, I'm glad to announce that is no more. Because on v1.6, LouLouCore has achieved the sub 20 with a 19:58! This follows his previous record of 20 minutes flat which was so tragically short of the minute barrier. The 21 minute barrier was broken just a couple of months after I started running this game, so to see the next minute barrier, and the final one, broken almost 5 years later truly feels incredible.

Although.. that's not quite the absolute last time we will see Bug Limit Great Plateau Any% cross a minute mark. Of course I am alluding to the Switch 2 Edition again in which Lou also ran during July and achieved a time of 19:07. As this is only the second record set so far, there is no doubt that this will eventually come down to an 18 minute time. It's really shocking that S2E loads can save so much time in a category as short as Great Plateau Any%.

Tears of the Kingdom

Tears over the last couple months has been really exciting to have an eye on and because of the increased activity it's a bit difficult to write from the perspective of someone only capable of theorising what might happen over the next month. I've started writing this literally straight after having woken up and catching the end of Player5 finish off the first sub-2:30 All Dungeons run. The grind was spurred on by a series of new strategies developed since the start of the year, including the use of infinite pocket rocket. Aside from his first WR of 2:36, every record over July took over a minute off the previous, which isn't that unusual looking at the history of AD but still huge considering the increased optimisation of each new record.

Similarly, MoldyMeatballs lowered the 1.0 Any% record by a further 6 seconds, bringing it to just 2 seconds above the 38. This is where I'd say 'I think he'll do it next month' except he did exactly that just 5 days into August. So I guess instead I'll rhetorically ask now whether or not 37 will ever happen. And I do think it will happen.. eventually. Moldy's current sum of best is 38:03 so it seems pretty safe to say it won't be happening with current strats. But we are still only 2 and a bit years into the game's life; it would be foolish not to say that something significant enough to drop enough time will be found at some point.

More improvements were made in other Any% versions as well. Lime_s1, who's been very active recently in lots of other glitchless categories, has got his first glitchless Any% world record on the Switch 1, lowering Mythicy's fairly longstanding time by 15 seconds.

Calamity_Link has also got the first Switch 2 Edition world record with a 56:27. This run utilised the Like Like method to activate arrow smuggling which you can see is much harder on 60fps, with the window for successfully performing the glitch halving to a mere 60th of a second. Echecetdame, too, did some runs of Any% on this version of the game but used a different method to get arrow smuggling. Had Zelda Notes not been banned from the boards, his time of 47:17 would be record, with a glitch in the app and it's weapon transfer functionality allowing for an extremely fast AS setup. Regardless of whether or not Zelda Notes is banned, it's only an inevitability that the S2E will beat Dracolink's Switch 1 time of 48:34.
