Breath of the Wild
Something I've enjoyed watching since the Switch 2's release is all these main board categories you might not immediately think of have their first 1.8.2 or 60fps runs verified. August had a lot of shrine-related categories either run for the first time or improved. takae was running the 1.8.2 S1 version of All Shrines, achieving a current time similar to that of runs immediately preceding the disovery of BLSS. daqiu was simultaneously running All Shrines but at 60fps and his current and first PB of 4:37:20 shows the sheer strength of S2E loads, that he should be less than 30 minutes away from the 1.6.0 world record despite the handicap of no BLSS, weaker windbombs and weaker BTBs. I think it'll be a category to watch in case the S2E becomes the faster version.
Speaking of, Echecetdame's Bug Limit runs of Master Sword on 60fps instantly resulted in the subcategory being 6 minutes faster than its Switch 1 counterpart, before lowering his PB by another 3 minutes. moistgoolash also completed the first No Limit run of 60fps MSR. Despite it being 15 minutes slower than Player5's 1.6.0 record I think there is some real promise in the category and potential for the time to go much lower.
moist was active on the category extensions board as well, slaying every miniboss in 1.8.2 S1E All Kilton Medals, just about achieving a sub-2 hour run. He then went on a lynel killing spree on 1.6 and ran the first 47 minute no ancient arrow All Lynels run.
Lastly for BotW that had me most excited was a new Bug Limit 10 Koroks world record by a massive 11 seconds. To pull this off TheSquirrelSaysMeow (who also got the No Limit record last year) simply didn't warp back to SoR after picking up fire arrows. One thing I love in routing is someone finding something so blatantly obviously faster that makes you go "Why didn't we do that before?" and this is especially true of BL 10 Koroks which is one of the categories I have poured a lot of time and effort into. I think I'll want to get back to grinding it with this new routing to see if I can take back the record after almost 2 years.

Tears of the Kingdom
To start off the TotK section for August, I need to mention a change to the All Main Quests rules that invalidated a number of previous world records. Previously, it was thought that the 'true/best ending' cutscene was an indicator of all main quests having been completed. This was important because if skipping cutscenes in endgame, a couple of quests also have their 'Complete' animation skipped and one of these included the 'Destroy Ganondorf' quest. A reroute last year included skipping the interaction that would give the quest in the log and so it was assumed that the quest was ticked of by the game regardless of whether or not it had been obtained. This was proven false recently and has led to a number of runs being retroactively rejected, meaning for pre-v1.2.1, zfg's October 2023 3:27:34 is back on top for now.
As one famous speedrunner of the '70s so perfectly said, 'A week is a long time in speedrunning' and 50 years later that still rings very true. Releasing last month's Record Roundup halfway through August meant I was writing it with a preview of what I would be writing about now and perhaps the most monumental of them all was MoldyMeatballs breaking the 39 barrier in Any% almost exactly a month ago and that just feels so long ago now. Yet it still feels almost surreal to look at the leaderboards today and have 1st place be miles ahead of anything deemed even remotely possible just 2 years ago. If you missed it, I talked more about it last month.
One area that really popped off or has been popping off the last month and a bit is All Dungeons which had seen almost 8 minutes worth of improvements due to the new implementation of infinite pocket rocket and some cart slide optimisations. It was only up until just a couple of days ago that Player5 had been the one lowering the record when MoldyMeatballs swooped in and beat him by over another minute. Other records of All Dungeons by Twik, NayruAcolyte and MrKorok have me looking forward to what will happen to the category in the near future and if the rapid record-breaking it's had will continue with the same speed.
